In welcome news, the government announced in May 2023 that aged care providers will be able to access an Industry Labour Agreement for the sponsorship of Nursing Support Workers, Personal Care Assistants and Aged or Disabled Carer for the Subclass 482 – Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa. The Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement also includes the possibility of sponsorship for permanent residence under the Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa, either as a direct pathway or after further employment.

Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement features:
Full-time positions only
Up to 4-year Subclass 482 – TSS visa
Sponsorship of Nursing Support Workers, Personal Care Assistants and Aged or Disabled Carers, including all positions within those occupation categories
English requirement of 5.0 overall (IELTS standard), 4.5 minimum for standard providers and 4.5 overall, no minimum for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) aged care providers (if employee is fluent in the community language)
Employee to hold Certificate III relevant to occupation or Skill Assessment and 12 months’ work experience
No age limit for the Subclass 482 – TSS visa
Salary of $51,222 or market rate for a full-time position
Possible direct application for permanent residency under Subclass 186 – ENS visa if employee has 2 years’ experience in the occupation (or a closely related agreement occupation) in Australia
Age limit of 45 and 5.5 overall (IELTS standard), no minimum for the Subclass 186 – ENS permanent visa
Before accessing the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement aged care providers must enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the relevant union, either: Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, the Health Services Union or the United Workers Union.
